Virtual Private Network (VPN) in Windows Server 2008 R2

Virtual Private Network (VPN) in Windows Server 2008 R2

VPN is a service and protocol which is used to connect the secure communication between the private and public network. They can transfer the encrypted database in a VPN connection with the help of tunneling. Tunneling is a secure chain of VPN that connects the two networks by L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) and PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol). The encrypted data is decrypted at receivers end.

L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol)

It is the tunneling protocol that configures on the server site. It is also known as port forwarding.

PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol)

It is used by the routers to communicate the VPN connection.

The VPN connection is also uses authentication protocol to authenticate the user from server or router. It uses two authentication protocol -

1. PAP (Password Authentication Protocol)

This protocol is an unsecured protocol that stores the User ID and Password in plain text format.

2. CHAP (Challange Handshake Authentication Protocol)

It is a secured authentication protocol that encrypts the User ID and Password for secure communication.

Requirements for VPN

1. Two NIC cards required. One is public and another is private.
2. AD should be installed in your enterprise.
